What Are Quilters Blogging About Today?

I have hidden some toys in amongst the logs for this weeks mid week Log Cabin retreat.

I wonder how many toys are being wrapped up each day at the moment.

At a Christmas lunch a few days ago the man next to me found a tiny little spinning top in a Christmas cracker. I had to test it out, and it worked beautifully. It just kept spinning, but it was way too small for a small child to be allowed to play with it, but it kept me and the gentleman amused for a few ...

The blocks were chosen for the Elevenses projects, but I decided it was time for change.

Quilting became popular in Australia in the 1980s, and so many groups in cities, suburbs and in country areas are celebrating 40th anniversaries in the next few years, and I know of one state group is calling for red and white quilts for their anniversary, and a small country group is thinking about it, so I have joined the celebrations by giving project files a make over. The first design today is rather smart.

The way the pieced blocks frame the applique blocks in the main part of the quilt is very interesting.

Love the combination of subdued pieced blocks and strong contrast applique.

Some times less is more.

Make that OFTEN less is more … especially when it comes to allowing space for quilting to shine.

Love the quilting space again, but also love the centre panel.

The blocks around the outside must be courtyard paving … would be great if we could get paving like that!

I love the peacocks.

Have to admit though that the paving looks better when there are some potted plants on it!

Love it. Warm colouring, space for quilting, unusual applique and interesting pieces!

I think I would call this a modern quilt design.

I have just watched a video about the conflict between traditional and modern quilters. I saw modern quilts which would look great on a wall, but would not look great on a bed, while most traditional quilts would look great on a bed where they keep people warm. Overall I am attracted to any quilted item with good use of colour and contrast, and some I would like on a wall, others on a bed. I would like to think that the design above, and most in this project file ...

I still like the colours in these designs … they remind me of antique quilts.

Very interesting design.

The blocks in this project file are based on designs I found in Electric Quilt library collections, most from Classic Applique, some from Classic pieced.. Every block has been modified, some just a little, some have had multiple surgeries. Some pieces from some applique blocks have been mixed up with pieces from other blocks.

Generations of quilt designers could shuffle the current collection of designs and still be designing new quilts, and probably still be shuffling the pieces in blocks to create new blocks. Of course, each generation of designers would have to use new fabric designs ...

I started with Fiddlebobs blocks, and added a handful of pieced blocks, not being sure what might happen with this mixture, but at least the first designs looks OK.

So far, so good!

If ever I get all the unfinished projects, and the planned projects, finished, I will be making quilts with some low contrast fabrics like the designs in this project file.

Interesting design, but disappointing colours.

Another interesting design, and the colours are more interesting than the first. Amazing what adding more green leaves have done to the colour scheme, though still a bit washed out.

I started this project file to challenge myself to design something outside my comfort zone. I think I moved the comfort zone because I love some of the designs I found by playing with some weird looking blocks along with some pretty colours.

Pretty and interesting.

The Log Cabin block usually starts with a square, but can also start with a rectangle, a triangle, and a hexagon. Starting with an octagon might be a step too far, but is possible!

Different and very unusual!

The appliques could be done on plain blocks, or pieced blocks using low contrast fabrics for each round.

The one above is my favourite so far …

… but the last one finishes first in the favourite ratings from me!

More Log Cabin designs mid week, next week.

Not my favourite mix of colours by a long way, but I love this project file, and all the designs in it.

I think my favourite of these two designs is the first one, but i may change my mind.

It would be hard to ignore the first version in a quilt exhibition …

… but I would prefer the washed out colours in the room I had to sleep in every night. Much more restful.
